Since the complaint seemed to be about what the guy was wearing, I would think it was a common area. Otherwise wouldn't you complain no matter what a strange man in your room was wearing? I wouldn't care if he was wearing a g-string or a tuxedo, I'd be calling the cops.

The OP left out the thing I worry about most.

BEDBUGS!!!

Taking them home would be the ultimate disaster.

"Bedbugs" - That's the first thing I check for when I find my room - they're infesting a lot of hotels and motels nowadays - you sure don't want to take any home with you!

4) Seat back of desk chair bent back 90 degrees.
5) Three of the electrical outlets did not work.
6) Bathroom sink does not drain.
7) All the ambiance of a section 8 apartment complex.

Only one more night ...

In all fairness, we received two nights camped, which represented 50% of the charge.

Most of those things I'd just shrug and move on without a complaint if it was a single issue. Face it, sometimes things are beyond anyone's control--the cable/satellite/Internet company signal isn't working through the entire region, there is a disturbance in the street outside the hotel, a baby is crying in the next room, etc.

Dirty room, non-smoking room that had obviously been smoked in, things like that I'll simply tell them the room I was assigned was unacceptable and why, and ask for a new room.

It's when things begin to compound that a complaint is in order. Or bedbugs, that's my #1 issue. Another biggie is non-functioning HVAC, and if they can't get it working, they better plan on finding me an equal or better room, even if it means in a different hotel

I've only a few times had to escalate to a manager, once was bedbugs, once was being assigned a moldy smoking room with two twin beds in an outer building when we had a confirmed booking for a non-smoking king room in the main building, and once was when some kids in the next room were throwing a party that was still running strong at 2:00 am and the security guy had not come up to speak to them despite four calls to the desk.
