I need to buy a flight for Christmas. When I was looking at the roundtrip fares, they were astronomical! I found a decently priced one-way for the way there, but I need to still buy a flight back the weekend after Christmas.

Does anyone have any tips? Is it possible to find a decently priced or I will have to empty out my bank account just to get back?

You've missed the boat on decent air for holidays. Right now it's a crap shoot depending on where you are going if there will be a price drop and you have to constantly check, every day, several times a day at different times.

You really waited too late to book for Christmas. I started checking around in July/Aug. for different areas, Key West, the N. E. & West Coast. The magic number seemed to be $408.00, before taxes and added fees per person. The closer you get the higher it is going to be. People I know are starting to book at least 6 mos. out for vacation travel now because the prices are so high.

The weekend after Christmas is peak travel time so it is unlikely fares will drop for those dates. If you have some flexability in your travel check a day or two sooner or later. Also consider flying in or out of a nearby airport. Might find a better fare.

Agree with the others thst you've likely waited too long. Try looking at trevelling on dec 25th, dec 31, jan 1. Those days may yield a cheaper fare.

You might get a better deal if you come back after the 1st. A co-workers is traveling over the holidays and has to be back to work on the 31st and airfare for him was more expensive then wait a couple more days.

As soon as possible. I got my airfare back to Chicago for Christmas on Saturday...cheapest I found was a little over $500 with my return flight from the Quad Cities (have family out there and the Chicago area). Everything else was between $600 and $1000+ for just Chicago-Denver round trip!

Note- New Year's Eve night flight (after 7-8 pm) or a New Year's Day morning flight (earlier than 8-9 am) is the best travel time...everybody wants to be getting drunk or sleeping in from drinking, not flying. When I went to Argentina I flew on New Year's Eve night...had the back 1/4 of coach to myself and it was a lot cheaper than normal! I am sure all flights after 7-8 pm take off time local have a similar situation.

Are you flying within the US or internationally?

I just booked a Toronto-Brussels r/t trip for $680 all in leaving Dec. 26th, returning Jan 15th. keep looking, deals are lurking everywhere, you just got to poke around long enough for some to materialize. The sooner the better at this point though, I would think. Two months seems to be the sweet spot.
