Directions or other assistance is pretty much it for us as well. The last time we were in Rome a nice Brit couple stopped us and asked if we spoke English. They were really relieved when we said we did and were able to point them in the right direction to get where they were going.

They were too scared to take the subway and really afraid of everyone and everything after reading all the warnings about pickpockets and scam artists. I felt bad for them, but at the same time wondered why they even bothered to travel if all they could do was be fearful of everything around them.

That's a funny situation. Maybe they won the trip and it was free.
