It's funny how people in the east want to go to the Caribbean, the upper Midwest to Mexico, and the west to the Pacific.

I don't know if this correlates to most likely to travel to...For example, Poland and Illinois likely has something to do with the large Polish population, but not that people in Illinois love to travel to Poland.

Only because Florida has the largest population of Haitian ex-Pats in the US. They must have had the interns do that story, because it doesn't take any demographic info into consideration.

Worse than that: The author used the data to justify an article about travel, but the data was not necessarily collected from those that were searching for information about traveling to those locations.

Read: "it shows the international destination that people from your state search for in comparison to the national average"

I think your assumptino about Haitian ex-Pats (et al) is on target. They are searching for information on their homeland, or about where their ancestors came from. The searches in other states indicate similar patterns.

Whatever, I'd say the topic of this article is skewed and the data is probably badly flawed.

A collection of snippets and 'news'...right up there with Yahoo 'news', imo.

This map is almost meaningless.

Many of those trips made are to visit families in their original countries so they are not "travel". If you study Vancouver, you probably will find there are a lot of Hong Kong/China bound trips, it doesn't mean Vancouverites are particularly interested in visiting those places as a tourist destination.

It really should exclude all trips for family reasons and include only sightseeing trips.

I'm guessing you don't know the definition of travel.

Travel - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The reason for the trip is irrelevant; the pure act of going is considered "travel". Nowhere in the article does it state that this map indicates purely vacation or pleasure travel.

How is that not considered travel?

I'm guessing it might have something to do with travel times. Eastern USA to Caribbean is close and the Caribbean is seen as the closes exotic travel location. Same with the West coast and Asia. As for the Midwest, would you choose Canada or Mexico for an exotic location? I'd love to see some parts of Canada rather than Mexico but I could see why people would choose otherwise.
