Two places come to mind: one will shock most of you, the other maybe not: the first like was just posted is Niagara Falls, but on the Canadian side. Part of our problem, hubby had a hernia that needed surgery so he felt awful, but even without that; the bus trip from Toronto to the falls was a long day, the guide was not entertaining, everything in the city was expensive and the people were anything but friendly. Yes the falls are spectacular but they are still just like any other falls except much higher.
The second place that disappointed us: believe it or not was Hawaii and we have been there more than once. It was fun, we enjoyed our visits but after living in So. CA for so many years, I didn't see Hawaii being that much different than most of the So.Ca coast. We have been to the big island, Maui and Oahu.
As for those who found Los Angeles disappointing, I can understand, but part of it is, the city is so spread out. You really have to know exactly what you want to see, have plenty of time, a car and best of all, someone who can tell you the ins and outs of the area.
Probably Mount Rushmore. Not because it wasn't good, but because it wasn't the 'life-changing experience' that some make it out to be. It was a neat way to spend a morning and would make a worthwhile diversion during a road trip, but it's not something I would center a vacation or even a whole day around.
It was 8pm on a Sunday in early September, and just about everything was shut down except the Hard Rock restaurant and the casino. It's a tiny place, ridiculously run down and seedy, few places to eat, and did I mention dirty and run down?
And I was floored at how the majority of visitors were Indian. So much so that the scent of curry just hung in the air OUTSIDE. I would have to say that about 50% of the people we saw were Indian, probably 30% were Asian, and the other 20% were everything else.
And before you call me racist, I'm not saying it was a problem, just noting how surprised I was, because I've never travelled anywhere with that high of a concentration of ANY foreign nationality.

I was completely underwhelmed with Hawaii too. I think the main reason is because I've traveled to a lot of islands and beaches, and compared to those places, Hawaii was not as beautiful. Seriously, I would take Florida's gulf coast anyday over Hawaii's beaches.

I feel like unless you are really well off and are ready to spend a good amount of money, Hawaii may be disappointing for many people. I've never been but I can imagine it's basically beach full of tourists and whatnot.
The nicer areas with better views/quieter beaches will probably cost quite a bit. The average Joe vacation family probably won't be able to afford that.

We happen to love the Caribbean because it is so much more diverse than Hawaii. Hawaii is just like any beach city but a long flight. There are tourists everywhere and the Natives are just normal American people, whether Asian or Caucasian. The Caribbean natives are a variety, and the culture is very different than our culture. I know, a lot of people have trouble with the poverty on many islands, but what we often forget, for the most part they are very happy people.
What I find funny is Europeans who mock Americans who have only traveled to Florida and Cozumel or Cancun. When you ask them where they have been, its Corfu, Malaga, Ibiza, Mykonos, and if they are really an adventurous student of the world, Tenerife.

I don't think it's the price. We stayed at oceanfront resort and although we went during Christmas and New Year's holidays, there were plenty of quiet beaches to explore. I just didn't find the beaches that beautiful, food was average (they have great sushi though), and the landscape was ok. I just didn't find the place that interesting. It's bland, for lack of better word.

We also stayed at pretty much top of the line hotels with ocean views and nice amenities. I am with you, the beaches are pretty much like any beach and the food is expensive but not that great. One visit we did have a couple of outstanding dinners at a price I will add. One island, that is supposed to be unbelievable in Kauai and we have not been there.

When one has seen the California coast, above San Francisco and near the center part of the state or traveled the area north of RI or the Atlantic coast of Canada for starters you have seen the real beauty of the water as it hit the land.
