People, especially European tourists seem to rave about Marrakesh. I was a bit intrigued but when I did more research, after checking out the photographs, reading travel journals and watching some videos, I really didn't find there is much so intriguing about this city.

To me, it is all about that Djemaa El-Fna square, where people perform shows and sell stuff, and the market place there you are likely to be ripped of heavily for things you don't really need. I know the The Medina has all those small alley ways where you can see craftsmen making stuff. And everything looks really run-down and chaotic. I am not saying it is not interesting, but one doesn't fly 10 hours just to see people making carpets. I watched quite some youtube videos and there doesn't seem to be anything that excites me that I have this "I want to be there" impulse.

Or I am missing something? Does Marrakesh live up to the hype?

I am interested in seeing the Sahara though.

Considering the gripes you have posted about places like San Francisco, I doubt you will like Marrakesh. There is more to it than the medina and square. But that's mostly what people go to see.

I thought Marrakesh was great and I stayed there for a month.

You've obviously done some research on the city and found it not to your liking, Move on to research on alternate destinations.

I actually want to go to Morocco. Why? Because it's different. Because I want to experience that. That's all the reason anyone needs.

It's like stepping back in time. At least it was when I was there.

Most of the countries you visit outside the developed world will feel like stepping back in time compared with rich countries. Peru? Vietnam? Kenya?

Stepping back is not a good enough reason for the high popularity.

I heard Fez is more interesting and less touristy than Marakesh. Wonder if that's true.

Yes, that's true. Fez is less touristy. Marrakesh is still a magical place. The trick is to avoid tourist season, avoid tourists, and try to avoid the touts. (Touts are very pushy in Morocco.)

You've already made up your mind. Why belabor discussing Marrakesh?

Well since you've never been there how do you know you wouldn't like it?
