My flights are usually under 2.5 hours so I rarely am on a flight with free snacks, just a free beverage is offered. I eat before/after the flight, and it only takes a moment to pick up a snack (if needed) to bring along or during a layover so it is rare indeed for me to want to buy any food on a plane. I agree the prices are crazy though!
air Canada food is absolutely rubbish. During my 10+ hour flight, what they kept offering was dry and tasteless chicken and rice or tough beef and pasta. I took a look and could hardly eat anything. They might as well work as dog food.
A few times when flying in coach I have bought the snack box for 5 dollars. All things considered they are a fair deal. You get 4 or 5 different items and by the time I finish them I am full.
PDX airport is one of the better airports I fly out of. Just after the security checkpoint there is a little market that has a free water bottle filling station. The airport also requires merchants to not charge anymore than they charge at their off airport locations. While the prices still seem a little higher, they are better than most airports.
I can't stand it when someone brings McDonalds or similar fast food on the plane. Even if you are sitting 10 rows away, the stink of grease is unreal. In an open area, I don't mind the smell so much (but it isn't great), but in the confines of the cabin with recirculated air...
I once sat next to a guy who brought a huge bag of Doritos and sat there munching the whole filght. The smell of Dorito breath and the three or four Jack and cokes he drank made me ill (not to mention the crunch, crunch, crunch for two and a half hours).
If you must bring food, bring something like a cold sandwich, salad, fruit.

I like to stop at one of those places that does a "build your salad" on my way to the airport and get a salad with chicken breast. I put the dressing in my 3-1-1 bag to get it through security.

It's hardly the passengers fault that airlines are now so stingy they won't provide any food even on long haul flights, and some airlines won't offer drinks either. Thus, we have to find economical alternatives to being further gouged by these greedy companies. I personally can't stand whiny, nitpicky passengers I have to fly with. We're all in the same bucket o' misery, and my philosophy is to grin and bear the annoyances that come with it in exchange for the convenience and safety that flying offers me and the other passengers. You must be loads of fun at parties
I don't understand those complaints on food in airplanes. Maybe it's crap if someone flies "Congo air" but on the big companies I fly usually-I fly long range so meals are a necessity- (AA, Qatar,AF/KLM, Iberia...), food is absolutely OK quality wise (and I'm not someone into fast food), the only problem for me being the quantity (I'm a "big" eater and travelling-and flying-tends to open up my appetite); and I'm not speaking of business class, I fly "cattle class"!

People want food, larger seats with more leg room, and pillows, but shop around to find the lowest fares and have a hissy fit when they have to pay more than it would cost to take Greyhound. I really hope airlines raise fares by 20%. It would get the whiners who pay $239 for a cross country flight and then expect first class service and amenities back to the bus they never should have come off of.

The food is enough quantity for the average person. If they catered enough for "big" appetites, they would throw a lot of it away. Higher priced tickets and more garbage makes no sense. You always have the option of bringing food on board.
