I'm leaving tomorrow morning to visit my sister for thanksgiving in San Francisco. I drive a 2010 Rav 4 base with CXV Performer tires. I'm not very used to driving in the snow/ice and I want to try to avoid it as much as a I can. So far it looks like I need to go north to Wyoming then thru Utah and Nevada via 80-west. I plan on stopping twice overnight. I'm thinking Salt Lake City then Reno, which will have me touch down in SF Thursday afternoon (8hrs, 8hrs, 4hrs).
Does anyone have an alternative route that may be safer? Any other recommendations for overnight stops that may avoid driving through the snow/ice? Thanks.
There is a storm coming through the Colorado mountains tomorrow so check the weather to be sure that I-80 will be in good shape. I-70 currently has some snow pack over the passes, check the Wyoming cameras for the current conditions there. If you can try to stay overnight on the west side of Salt Lake to avoid the morning traffic jams, we usually stay out by the airport.
If you run into bad conditions, slow down, keep some distance from other cars and pull off the road if you feel too uncomfortable. Bring food, water and warm clothes just in case you have a storm.
