Why haven't more people gone on cruises? (cruise ship, vacations, tipping)

Yes, more and more people are cruising than ever before but still the majority of people have not gone on a cruise. I wonder why. If you go on a low priced cruise that is on sale you can take a week long vacation for under $800 a week. It includes all the food you can eat that tastes pretty good and some great entertainment and many interesting ports of call.

If you have not been on a cruise, why not?

I've only been on one real cruise--and this was when the in-laws paid, it was sort of a family reunion. It was the Bahamas for Thanksgiving.
We had a pretty good time.

The other thing we did was rent a yacht with the in-laws. This was very expensive indeed, but very fun, and a beautiful location (British Virgin Islands.)
I am not that interested in huge cruise ships; it just feels like a rather bovine experience. Expense is still a factor for me.
For most low-priced cruises, you still have airfare to worry about. And all the tipping at the end of the cruise.
I'd rather pay the airfare and then go wherever I *really* want to go.

Yeah, lots of us don't like that style of travel. It's to organized, to regulated, to limited.
Independent travel for some leads to a more rewarding travel experience, and I can care less about food or casinos or sunbathing on the deck.

It's a shame some of you don't like cruising. Maybe you had a bad experience? I've been on 8 cruises so far and plan more. Most cruise lines today offer more for the money than any other type of vacation. The big names like Princess, NCL, Royal Carribean plus others have more than just food and swimming. There are enough varied activities and entertainment to exhaust you if you want. The food is great, off shore tours are great, you only unpack once and have all types of amenities offered you. Service is in the most part excellent.
You get out of your vacations what you put into them. If you don't join in the fun, activities etc, then you have yourself to blame for your misery.

I agree. I would rather spend more time visiting interesting places than sit on a boat eating, drinking and watching some forgetable lounge acts.

I guess I like to spend my days exploring different places all day long. The cruise is too much of the same for me.

Who wants to sit on a boat and only spend 1 day in each touristy port of call? To do anything halfway interesting at the ports, it's generally a few hour drive away.

Nope, nothing a cruise can give me now that won't be there when I'm 80 or 90 and too old to do anything interesting!
