Don't get me wrong, I like San Juan (and PR in general). In fact, I was just there a few weeks ago on a different cruise. I've also flown there in the past and stayed for a week in hotels in both the Isla Verde and Condado sections of San Juan. If you've never been there, I'd definitely recommend that you visit there at least once.
Have fun on your cruise. ..We are going Feb 1st out of San Juan
...love the forts. ....I would vote for Puerto Rico myself. ...only spent a little while 2 years ago when we left from there on our first ever cruise and we didn't get to see much... wherever you go OP have fun!!!

Any input on whether or not its safe for me to travel to Cancun (or Playa) by myself as a single female?

I will choose Miami if Cancun just isn't a smart idea.

We were in Cancun-Playa del Carmen-Tulum in the first two weeks of December, we also did travel as far as Merida, as well as to the many little villages in the Yucatan peninsula. At no time did we feel unsafe, granted we are a couple with a small child and the Mexicans are very respectful of small children. In addition, there is practically one police standing at every intersection in the busy or touristic part of the towns.

On the other hand, if peace of mind is important to you, I would stick to the resorts and arrange beforehand to have the resort/hotel send a shuttle bus to pick you up at the airport.

Thanks for your insight.

Yes, I think the biggest deal in terms of safety is transportation. I plan to stay in the heart of Playa, but I want to make sure I am taking 'legit' modes of transportation to/from the airport, and also if I decide to go to Cancun or Isla Mujeres. I am thinking of doing a day trip out there.

I would like to have one night out in the area I'm staying; I'm supposed to be a few blocks from the night life. I'm wondering do I need to arrange for a taxi to/from the night clubs? I understand I should call for them in advance and never 'hail' any from the street.
