Lakes don't inspire me, oceans only inspire me when they're turbulent with waves slamming against rocks and sea walls, but rushing mountain streams: Ah! They can put me into a trance, hold me spellbound anytime! So, for me, my top travel choice would be near a river with rapids, over ocean or lake.
Ocean, hands down. I'm a warm weather person, so it has to be tropical. I love the warm, moist breeze blowing in, am a sucker for fresh seafood (not fond of freshwater fish) and LOVE snorkeling, deep sea fishing, and searching tide pools and clumps of seaweed for treasures and critters. Lakes have their uses and mountain streams are beautiful. Float trips on local rivers in my kayak are a great way to spend a summer day. But if I had to pick ONE for the rest of my life.....OCEAN!
OCEAN!! Sailing on the ocean while relaxing on my balcony! I love the gentle rocking of the ship with the slight noise the ship makes as its breaking thru the water..love that, puts me to sleep every night, just wish I had it at home!
I love all 3 - the water is just something great - i grew up in a land of lakes settled into rolling hills
i spent the first part of my honeymoon on the shores of lake superior - watching the moonlight reflect off the water from my room, canoeing over the cold waters, stunning
being on the shores of a hard moving river or even a babbling brook is absolutely entrancing as well
then the ocean, it's vastness - being on a boat surrounded by nothing but water, on a tropical beach enjoying the sun, reef and surf - on a coastline watching the tide break against rugged cliffs
Ocean - because when i'm there its usually hot and i love the beach more than anything else. But i like camping and cabrewing and stuff so lakes and rivers are awesome too. I just love water. I even love man made fountains in cities.
Most of my favourite cities to visit are on rivers (Montreal, Paris, Lyon, Ottawa etc). However if I were to visit a place just based on geography, I prefer oceans over mountains or rivers.
I always say Montreal would be the city on earth if it weren't so far inland!
