So I need to fly from Atlanta to Philly in a couple of weeks. This time of year a major concern is obviously a winter storm. I've never had to deal with a delayed flight from a storm or even had to worry about it. I was wondering if anyone has a lot of experience flying during this time of year to a cold area and how to deal with it. I was also looking at travel insurance so I don' t just lose all my money.
You aren't exactly flying to the North Pole, don't worry about it. Weather events are unpredictable, you just deal with it. But forget being overly concerned about winter - it could be summer thunderstorms, heavy winds, or winter weather, I've even been delayed because of extreme heat. Fortunetly technology has improved so that it has to be a drastically bad storm to significantly impact air travel exceeding a few hours. You are more likely to be delayed due to mechanical issues or because or heavy air traffic.
One point to note - you don't have to be traveling north for bad winter weather to effect airtravel. One bad storm in the Northeast can cause ripple effects all through the flight schedule even for a flight between, let's say, Atlanta and El Paso.
True, the weather could be fine in both ATL and PHL, but unless you are on the first flight of the morning on that equipment, weather in CLT or DEN could cause ir ops.
If there is a storm coming and you call in advance they will often let you fly the day before with no change fee. All you have to do is call and ask but I've never had them say no or charge a fee. If flying before isn't convenient try changing to the day after. Staying flexible keeps you out of the airport just waiting to see what happens.

I agree, I've been able to get on a flight a day early without a fee in this type of scenario several times.
I'd also suggest knowing your options if you flight is cancelled. If they can't get you into PHL, can they get you to BWI through DCA or CLT? Unless your originating airport is on ground stop, there is almost always an option--particularly if you are willing to take the long way around--ie ATL to ORD to PIT to MDT.
I'd probably be taking a 630AM flight out of Atlanta. I would go a day earlier but it's 80 bucks more expensive. I'm trying to get to an event that same day at noon in Lancaster so I really don't want to be delayed at all or to the next day but if so, it really won't matter.
Thanks everyone.
