So I need to fly from Atlanta to Philly in a couple of weeks. This time of year a major concern is obviously a winter storm. I've never had to deal with a delayed flight from a storm or even had to worry about it. I was wondering if anyone has a lot of experience flying during this time of year to a cold area and how to deal with it. I was also looking at travel insurance so I don' t just lose all my money.

Here are a few things that might help.

Make sure you have the phone numbers of the airlines, hotels, car rentals and anyone else you can think of. You might want to add Amtrak's number as well. If a flight cancels or delays it will be a mad scramble to get rebooked.

Be proactive. If it looks like the airlines will be doing a mass cancellation of flights due to weather don't wait for them to call.

If it looks like the weather will be causing lots of cancellations the airlines usually waive their change fees.

If the flights are running full it could be a day or more before the airlines will be able to rebook you. The airlines elite members go to the front of the wait list. Everyone else gets whatever is left over.

They will get you on the next available flight, if delays or cancellations occur.

Keeping in mind that the next available flight could be several days later, and they won't provide food or hotels due to weather...

Bottom line, best bet is to be flexible and don't fly in the day you need to be someplace. Plan on coming in a day early.

What airline are you looking at flying?

Probably United. It was cheapest. Further complicating things is that I was going to take Amtrak from Philly to Lancaster. A friend who normally rides that route said to buy a ticket in advanced in case it gets filled. I was already planning on leaving a large window of time between the flight and train ride in case there's a delay. I'm mainly worried about a full on cancellation.

Fly direct and avoid American Airlines. That's about it.

Going from ATL I would book Delta, or USAir (AA) They will have the most flight to Philly. Also check SouthWest.

DoNot take a connection go Non/stop. If you can go out early Delay get worse as the day goes along.

Take a good book, Charger for your Phone/Tablet. ATL has Free WiFi now, But it is slow, Don't plan on streaming movies...

Most of the time the flight will go, Maybe Late, but unless there is a Blizzard, they will go eventually.

Definitely doing non stop. And wanted to take off in the morning. No later than 9 am.

You might also want to look into flying into Harrisburg, (MDT), It looks like DL is now flying ATL-MDT on its planes, not the regionally jets,

They show B717 (The 717 they are leasing from AirTrain/SouthWest) so they should be nice clean planes.

If only about a 30min drive from Lancaster to Harrisburg.

Air Traffic into MDT will be much less, so they are not as prone to have delays, due to queuing for runway/gates.

All good advice, above.
Don't be cheap and try to save $30. Do non stop.

Otoh, it is 11 hrs or less, weather dependent, from ATL to Lancaster. Long day drive, but I bet you will spend that time 'door to door', from your house to ATL to PHL, then train to Lancaster destination...
