We may have the opportunity to stay in a lovely home in Capetown, South Africa sometime between Oct 15-Jan 15 (though Home Exchange, which we have done very happily 6-7 times before). We would have up to one month in the home, but would not HAVE to stay there, meaning we could travel to other parts of SA or other countries.

We will have use of a car, but as it is right hand drive, we would like to limit that as much as reasonably possible.

Our #1 priority would be to go on an animal safari for perhaps 5-6 days. This does not have to be in Capetown. We are willing to travel elsewhere by bus, train or plane for the best experience (and will consider cost factors for this - we are NOT into super luxury travel, but are not interested in hostels, either).

Before I start deep researching, I figured I stop here to see what y'all might know.

Cape Town is a lovely city, but as with most places, location, location, location. In what district is the home located? Because of various mountains in the city (Table Mountain, Lion's Head) getting around Cape Town can be awkward and a bit time consuming, but there is so much to see in the area it's certainly worth it. Uncomfortable as it might make you feel, it's also wise to ask about home security measures/systems in place too.

There are relatively few safari opportunities in the southern half of South Africa; the major reserves tend to be in the north (around Kruger National Park), or the northeast (near the coast north of Durban) with a few along the Botswana border (such as Madikwe, near Gaborone.) From Cape Town these will require flights or flights + car drives.

In terms of when, I'd probably shoot for the October end of your window rather than later. Cape Town can become very warm in mid-summer, and the safari areas extremely hot and humid (and potentially malarial in the coastal or Kruger areas.) Or start with a safari in the north and then move south to Cape Town later.
