A vacation plan, two years in the making, will finally come on May 21st as I fly to Ireland (Killarney in Co. Kerry) for 4 days, then hop over to London for 4 days. I'm going to do lots of hiking and a day tour in Ireland, and I'll be seeing a play in London and just taking in all the sights. The preparation for this trip has made it the most expensive trip I've ever taken (purchased a high end carry-on bag, and an iPad in March). I've been experiencing some drama at work and having this vacation to look forward to has kept me sane.

How long did you plan your perfect vacation and where did you go?

Killarney is great!! Enjoy your trip.
For me the length of time planning depended on how expensive the trip was and my budget at the time.

friends of mine are going on a group tour, all friends, to Ireland in October for 10 days. They planned for about 18 months, as the price for a couple was pushing 5-6K and this gave them ample time to spread out the payments. the land wasn't bad but air can be a deal breaker for some.

Tell them to bring waterproofs then. Seriously.

My dream vacation is to just go to Arizona, Sedona and see the Grand Canyon. Planning it for 3 years and each year something has come up. Our budget is $2500, which is much more then most of our vacations. Neither of us are big into traveling overseas. If we could, I'd choose Israel or Egypt to visit for the history.

Killarney is a beautiful part of Éire (the Irish name for Ireland). I hitched all over that part of the world in my youth and remember the people as being very friendly inviting me into their homes even though I was a complete stranger. Killarney travel guide - Wikitravel

These days though, I tend to favor the tropics and often go to Thailand especially during the winter months in Europe. I hate the cold.

Killarney is wonderful and I hope that you thoroughly explore the beautiful County Kerry, including the neighboring Dingle Peninsula if possible. Killarney National Park is gorgeous and photogenic, as is Dingle. Have a great time!
