I'm not worried about lodging, I think I can get a decent airbnb, but as far as food, and transport, how much does it cost?

I really wish I had a better way of asking this question. It's so subjective. How far would say, 50 bucks a day between 2 people take you? Will that keep us fed, and seeing sites?

Rio is not cheap. Actually, most places in Brazil are not very cheap. Flight alone is over $1000 usually, you may get some around $600-800 but that depends on when you are going.

$50 will be about $150 in Brazilian currency, that will barely get you a decent meal. Maybe a cheap meal at a not so great place and maybe some sightseeing but not much at all.

Acually there is a deal right now to go to Sao Paulo for under 500 from LA and yesterday there was an error fare that we were able to snag to go to Iguazu Falls for just under 400, some people were able to get it for just under $300

If someone has a free place to stay in Rio which would definitely include breakfast (and sometimes dinner), would $50 a day work for a daily sightseeing budget?

Also remember that the Brazilian government hits American passport holders up for a fairly expensive visa/'reciprocity fee' that I'm told can be rather annoying and fussy to acquire.

Yes it is currently $160 and even though I live in the DC area and can drop off my passport at the Embassy, I also have to provide a USPS envelope with tracking in order to get it back. No pick ups allowed. It should be noted that the visa is good for 10 year so if it was a destination you may travel to a few time in that time frame it's not as horrible as it seems

Jeez. That's unfortunate. Maybe not enough to discourage me from going, but I'm going to have to weight it against some other places.

Also, I feel like unless Rio is REALLY expensive, 150 bucks a day is like, 150 bucks a day. Will I really not be able to get a decent meal at some local restaurant? I'm not necessarily looking to eat at any 5 star restaurants.

Another place I was interested in going, was Cairo. I know they have the whole, political upheaval thing. Is it dangerous? Keep in mind I'm not afraid of sketchy areas so much.

Where are you finding these cheap flights?

It is expensive, but it sounds a bit exaggerated to me that you would not be able to find good meals for $50/day. City Data dwellers tend to exaggerate ALOT.

I've been to Brazil quite a few times, just not to Rio. Buffets are very popular as are snacks(salgados) that are cheap and filling. Italian style sandwiches, burgers, pizza are popular too. There's pasta, beans, rice, street food.

You'll have plenty of affordable options if you are not picky.
