@ thefragile : well, there are personal reasons : my wife and I have fragile stomachs, so I don't believe India is the ideal destination for us...

I can understand having a certain curiosity about what it's like to actually be in a socialist dictatorship and experience that a little. But if you want that, far more staightforward and safer to go for a place like Kazakhstan where the local kleptocrats actually want foreign investment and tourism and make it somewhat easy to go on holiday there. (IIRC, you don't even need a visa for short trips to Kazakhstan anymore.)

I hear you! I was deathly ill when in India eating the food. Still, India was culinary heaven (taste-wise) and I'l love to go back!

I wouldn't go to India either. Sanitary issues, overcrowding, extreme poverty, and digestive issues will keep me away.

I lived in Miami for about 10 years. In all my encounters with Cubans I never learned anything about the people or the country that interested me. There are better beaches any number of places, the food is bland and unappealing, and I didn't like most of the Cubans I met in Miami because of their "you owe me" mentality.

I have several friends who have been to Cuba. From their vacation stories and pictures I've seen that the romanticized image of Cuba is just that--an image. I travel to third- and fourth-world countries for work. If I'm going to one for vacation it's going to be for amazing scenery or wildlife, and Cuba fails in both departments.

Having said all that, I think you will be able to cross Cuba off your list within the next couple years and if you do, I hope you have a great trip!

I went to Turkey and felt completely safe. I also wouldn't mind traveling to the UAE.

I despise Cuban politics, by the way. Fidel's island (Fidel Castro has been the longer serving dictator of the 20th century, nearly 50 years in power, and now his brother has followed him, it's a North Korea-like system) sas the poodle of the Soviet Union during Cold War. Now that Russia has abandoned communism, loo and behold! Cuba is drawing close to the US socialist Obama government!
and I hate their apartheid against foreign tourists, who are not allowed to use the national currency, but are racketted into using a special currency for tourists only, and herded into tourist ghettoes like Varadero.

There are more countries on my "definitely not going" list than on my bucket list, lol.
