'Great Circle' routing takes a lot of cross ocean routes way far north because the result is a lot fewer miles flown than on a route closer to the equator. Although Anchorage doesn't seem to have scheduled non-stop service to Asia, it's a commonly used emergency diversion airport when there's trouble on a transpacific flight just like the a number of Canadian Maritime airports handle emergency diversions for transatlantic route problems.

Actually, quite a few connect in Hawaii. AA has lots of flights to the Far East that connect in HI.

Continental used to own the Pacific routes, now they're United, and they're sort of a backwater. My flights to Manila used to be IAH-HNL-GUM-MNL. They have a NRT-GUM-HNL route as well as the full circle route to all the islands like Truuk, etc. from Guam.

Ah, probably more so than I imagine. i did notice a route that connected in HNL when I am looking for my trip to Beijing in August.

Though I guess relatively it's probably not as much as other big hubs on the continential 48. Certainly when one lands in HNL they want to stay there vs where-ever they are going!

show me one ticket that starts in US/Canada and arrives in China/Japan/Korea with a connection in Hawaii? I have personally never seen one after flying across the Pacific for 20+ times.

I may have to add more nations in the Middle East/North Africa after the Tunisia massacre last week. Far too much of this region seems to be too unstable/susceptible to Islamist extremism.

I don't know about AA (though I wouldn't doubt it), and I don't know about "a lot" of flights, but I found a flight from Los Angeles to Manilla (7/10-7/17), which counts as the Far East, with a layover in HNL and GUM via Expedia. This was on United, though. I'm sure that I'd find more if I changed some of the destination cities and dates. Still, I'd be shocked if it was a very common layover.

Part of the problem is that Hawaii is so far south compared to those north Asian countries. You'll probably only get UA that goes through GUM via HNL.

I remember doing HNL as a stopover from YVR to Australia many years back, but that's more of a stop than a connection.

Go to AA.COM and request an award ticket in business class. Almost all of them stop in HNL.
