I would avoid the Middle East and most of Africa. Unfortunately with all the violence and murders one place much closer I would avoid would be Chicago.

The middle east is not one same area. Only certain countries suffer wars.
I went to Jordan and Israel, both cities feel safer than majority of American ones.
I have no desire to ever visit India. If I'm going on a brutally long flight, I want to have a good reason to go. Nothing in India interests me. Same with Australia. London was cool to see once, but I wouldn't spend the amount of money I did to go back again.
I also don't have much interest in visiting flyover country (save Chicago).

By not going to Chicago you would be missing out on, the lake front, Navy Pier, concerts, plays, many restaurants, Magnificent Mile shopping, Lincoln Park Zoo, etc. It is true the there are some very bad partsof Chicago, but downtown Chicago is very safe and Chicago in general is too big of a city to generalize into one category.
With that said.......I also have no interest in going anywhere in the Middle East and any country in Africa. I also have no desire to go anywhere in Asia. As far as the U.S. I would skip Kansas, Arkansas and Mississippi.

You suggest him missing chicago yet you choose to miss the entire Asia and Africa, where there are tons of place more interesting than Chicago. Seems you can't go outside your comfort zone, [Mod cut.].

Reason: Rude; off-topic.

I have no interest in visiting those continents. Just as the previous poster has no interest in visiting Chicago and you have no interest in going to the Carribean. I have been to both Chicago and many parts of the Carribean, that's my choice!
The previous poster stated they didn't want to go to Chicago for safety reasons. I was pointing out not all of Chicago is unsafe, but some parts definitely are. Again, their choice.
Mod cut.

In reality, just as you say there are bad and great parts of Chicago there are also great and bad parts of Asia. It depends on one's choice then whether to vist those places and see the good parts and avoid the rough areas.
BTW, Chicago is a great city. I have been there quite a few times and loved it. I have also traveled extensively in Asia and a few places in Africa and they were amazing too. You have to see the giraffes and elephants in front of the Kilimanjaro at sunset or see the migration of the great herds of wildebeest, zebras and antelopes in Masai Mara to see how magical Africa is.
My post didn't say anything about avoiding those places due to safety or [Mod cut.]! I simply just have no desire to go there! [Mod cut.]
