I have only flown SWA a handful of times and I guess they know what they're doing in regards to their open seating system but I find it a bit annoying when I travel with my family and end up being one of the last groups to seat.

Usually there are many single passengers so they all take up the window and/or aisle seat leaving the middle open. Now we're stuck and have to split up including splitting up with my young daughter. Of course we could always ask some people to move but it's annoying.

TLDR: I prefer assigned seats on airplanes

You have a number of choices including paying for the automatic check in or buying one of the more expensive fares taht guarantees you priority boarding.

How "Young" is your daughter?

Age 4 and under you get to board after A group, Before B group. Just ask at the desk for a Family Boarding Group Pass.

If you get your boarding passes as soon as it open up 23:59 before your 1st flight you should find yourself in the Low-mid B Group. With that you should be able to find two seats together.

If you're traveling with a small child they will usually allow families to board between the A and B groups (at most 60 people on), you could also pay for A group boarding, or if you fly with them frequently and get A-list status, you will always get A group boarding. So there are ways to avoid what you find annoying, especially since getting assigned seats at the time of booking will often cost you extra and while they will try to seat a group together it's not guaranteed

Keep in Mind many SW flights Not everyone get off the plane, There will be thru passenger on the plane that all ready have seats on the plane.

After the Plane lands, and that city's passengers get off, the people on the thru flight can get up and re-arrange themselves and pick better/different seats before the A group gets on.

For an extra $25 RT, you don't have to be in a late seating group. With Early Bird Checkin, you'll be automatically assigned somewhere toward the end of the As or beginning of the Bs.

Or you can check in exactly 24 hours before and wind up somewhere toward the end of the Bs. Once you get to the Cs, it's pretty tough to get seats together.

I didn't know that South West did that. I'd be annoyed as well. Acknowledging that its only a disadvantage for those people who are boarding later, I hope that their ticket prices make such an inconvenience worth it!

Big reason I never fly SWA anymore. The couple times I did left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't see the advantage of this system over the regular seat-assignment system. All Southwest does is to make trouble for people traveling together/families who don't always get priority access.

Usually the price difference is comparable between Southwest and Delta/United/AA/etc and that's usually a better bet.

Don't even get me started on the Southwest mile-long lines for literally everything.

I luv SWA 'get-on-and-go' even tho I have priority on legacy carriers. SWA has much less 'turn time'.. (more time flying (profit) than waiting for people to find their seat and jam their life's treasures into carry-on (cooler / tools / baggage flies free on SWA).

As mentioned... you need only ONE of you to pay earlybird, and take all the kids backpacks and fill up the row, (not nice, but many do it)

If what I saw a few days ago is common with them these days, they've got a real problem getting flight crews into place for on time departures, making their turnaround not as great as the press clippings suggest. (IIRC, Jet Blue has the best utilization numbers in the USA domestic game right now.) Seems like about a third of the planes I saw while waiting for my own on Tuesday in Nashville were running 20-30 minutes behind schedule because they were holding for in-bound flight crews.

I'd prefer assigned seating. If WN otherwise fits my needs, I spring for the early bird check-in, which at least will pretty much guarantee an aisle seat and give me a decent shot at an exit row without the silliness of trying to check in at 23:59 from scheduled departure.
