I fly a lot - the economy seats are uncomfortable but well within the size for people of even above average size to fit.
The problem is obese and drastically oversized (bodybuilders/weightlifters). It should be the weightlifter's responsibility to sit sideways instead of their neighbor being squished.
Again, this shouldn't be an issue a passenger has to deal with on a plane. Awkward or not, the person is in front of a gate agent as they check them in to the flight. A visibly oversized person who they know, by looking at the screen, has a person next to them.
They should either self identify at check in to see if a vacant seat is beside them, or be asked to board last and only allowed if a seat is vacant.
I should not have to point out as a neighboring passenger what is obvious to any staff person with the airline (that I'm not getting the entire seat I've paid for). That's just plain irresponsible to transfer their responsibility to me.
I agree with this. I have gotten very good at wedging my shoulders into my allocated space against the seat back so the meathead next to me is forced to be the one to either sit sideways or hunched over.
Not the same thing. I'm pretty sure Mr. Geek is just talking extra space. Not extra space plus a bunch of overpriced unnecessary amenities at 4X the price of a regular seat.

In most airlines there is an "economy plus" which is extra room without the "perks"!

Yep, would engineers need to be involved on where to place this section of the plane if implemented??
Again the problem with offering seats for obese and other large people is that they will then say they want to sit with their family. it becomes a slippery slope. There are already options--buying an upgraded or second seat. To put in wider seats they will have to remove some seating and the lost revenue will be passed on the everyone--ridiculous.

On most airlines economy plus just gives you extra legroom, NOT extra seat width. Not helpful to someone who's horizontally rather than vertically challenged.
