Have a chance to go to Denver or the Philly/NYC area in septmeber, and wanted to get people's opinions on what they would do.

Planning a trip with three other people, price between hotel, flight and car is about the same.

Both locations have things that we all like.

How long is trip 'time'?

Denver, downtown and then Mtn areas or, Philly & NYC: very different trips and stuff to do.

My experience says the PHL/NYC version will be much more expensive once one is 'there', vs 'Denver' and mountains.

Philly isn't exactly 'next door' to NYC, and hotels in both cities, esp Manhattan, are pricey and get booked in a NY Minute.

Quite a divergent pair of places to vacay, and with none of us knowing your or your companions interests it will be a dart throw at this point.

We would really need to know more about your interests.

Also how long is the trip? And how far are you traveling to get there.

I enjoy all three cities but like NY the best. Denver is safe, clean, and fun, but... I get bored there after a couple of days.

Philadelphia has amazing history, but much of it is dirty and a good part of it isn't particularly safe.

New York is amazing and you could never see and do it all, even in a month. But it's expensive--probably much more so than you think it would be. Things seem to add up quickly there.

If you are flying in, Denver will cost you around $10 each way to and from the airport. LGA/JFK is $3 o/w but it takes forever or ~$15 o/w for the express bus to midtown. EWR is up around $15 each way, including the SkyTrain. PHL is probably the easiest to get from the airport to center city and runs about $8 o/w--very fast on the SEPTA train. I think you can also take a bus (slooowwww) for about $3.

Personally I enjoy Denver more due to the outdoors and really that's the main attraction with RMNP right there. Otherwise not much to do in Denver except your usual suburbia-type attractions (movies, clubs, paintball, arcades) You do get some bigger name comedians/artists coming into Denver (than say KC where I live) so there's that if you want to see someone live in concert/stand up.

There is more to do in the NYC/Philly area. But it depends on the length of your trip and what your interests are.

Personally, I would choose Denver every time because I prefer tall mountains to tall buildings. But you have to decide what is important for you. These two areas are totally different.
