Don't go in August, it's the humid, hot season, you will be miserable. I'm planning myself a trip to Cancun /Playa del Carmen, but next winter. Cancel your trip.

"Affordable" means different things to different people.
What is your budget and what airport are you flying out of?

Summer in Mexico is off-season, so good deals to be found. Try Apple and Funjet. Most are all-inclusive trips, which doesn't appeal to all, but just fine for a family vacation.

I agree with those suggestions (as well as the aforementioned cancellation and reschedule to another time of year), but I'd also check Groupon and Living Social.

Check out the deals on travelzoo.com.
Should be plenty of packages to suit your budget.

August is usually a really cheap time to go... Apple Vacations is a great site.

Look at JFK and PHL as other options for airports to find the best available deals.

Define 'affordable'. I find it hard to believe you can't find anything at $4000 in Cancun for August. From Newark too, one of the easiest connections around.

There are plenty of beachfront condos to be had for less than $100 per night.

You simply have not looked hard enough. or you've been looking at 5* all-inclusive resorts (which does not fall under 'affordable' category).
