Has anyone ever been? I've been reading mixed reviews on this overnight train trip in terms of the quality of the service and food and whether it is worth the cost. Was it a fun / nostalgic experience? Or just a slow expensive way to get to N'ahlins?

Even in a private room it is still a train, and not much better than a boat. IMHO train is fine for short trips such as between NYC and DC or Boston where flying can take as long by the time you get to the airport, get through security, etc. But if I can get there by flying faster or it's just as fast to drive, the train is not my first choice. Obviously commuter rail into NYC/Philly/DC/Chicago/Portland/Seattle/etc. has it's place, but that is an entirely different animal.
