Not really sure! Off to dc in about a week and I have to buy new clothes. I'm spending like $600 so I should be able to get more than enough.

It will mostly he medium level brands. I am going out to the Tyson's corner center which looks great and a day out, I'm just not sure if it would be better for me to buy my clothes in NYC or Dc? Is it cheaper in NYC? Do they have better sales?

Also how much money should I budget each day for normal things in nyc besides clothes shopping? It's hard to predict.

Definitely Tysons. Between Tysons and Tysons Galleria, anything you could want is available there.

And given your penchant for 4 star hotels, NYC will cost several hundreds of dollars a night for lodging and food. That's not including any entertainment expenses.

You might want to revisit your Trip to America thread that you posted when you were Summerwhale. If I recall there was info on DC and NYC in there.

I've already booked my hotel in nyc (4 star).

Yes Tyson's does look good, I just wasn't sure if NYC would be cheaper to shop. I always hear of the shopping there.

Also should we take the subway from jfk into nyc for our first trip or pay $60 for the car?

So where are you staying?

Nothing in NYC is cheaper, unless you're buying it from the guy with a few tables set up on the corner.

You'd do better by buying at consignment shops in either city.

$600 isn't going to stretch too far for medium/moderate quality. At Old Navy, sure. But at moderate mall chains and department stores, that will get you 10 items of clothing at most.

If you want something that is not cutting edge but also won't go out of style in the next 3-4 years, there's also TJ Maxx/Marshall's (same company as T.K. Maxx in the UK but without the VAT) and outlet malls like Potomac Mills.

Note that only a handful of outlet stores these days are truly trying to sell first quality merchandise there (North Face actually sells unsold previous season goods at their outlet stores, but there's kind of an exception) and that most outlet stores sell merchandise created specifically for those stores. So ignore the 'retail value is:' on the sales tags, and just go on whether you think that's what an item should be worth. And even though merchandise is outlet-specific a lot of it is still often pretty good quality. Spousal Unit the academic is very happy with dress shirts and pants from Brooks Brother's outlet-specific 3-4-6 line, and I've had good luck with Coach for somewhat more classic handbag styles than what they sell in the high street shops.

I imagine OP is relying on Metro, so Tysons will be his best bet. It's not impossible to get to Potomac Mills, but it's going to be time consuming and more expensive.

NYC may well be cheaper to shop, especially since there are often sample sales. Also, on less expensive items, there is no sales tax in NYC.

I can't help but wonder why, if you're worrying about money, you're in a four-star hotel.
