I have a lot of vacation I still need to take this year. I'm a single guy (not by choice) in my mid-40's and an introvert, meaning I don't just meet people wherever I am and typically do not enjoy traveling alone. WHile I'm an introvert, I can and like to be outgoing in the right setting. I really prefer shared travel experiences. I want to see more of the world, but for me, this isn't fun to do alone. As an example, I went to Mexico 2 years ago by myself for a week and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I just felt lonely, unable to really meet people, and out of place amongst mostly couples. After 3 days wanted to come back home.

I've considered "singles" cruises, but they don't appeal to me very much. I need suggestions here. Club Med is one I'm considering, and maybe that is the best idea. Anyone have any other ideas where a single guy can enjoy himself and not feel completely out of place amongst a bunch of couples? In an idea world, I'd be in a relationship or married, but that just isn't the case. Original, thoughtful suggestions welcome!

You might consider small group tours, and possibly small ship cruises. Emphasis on SMALL. In a group of around 20-24 people, everyone gets to know everyone else, and it doesn't matter so much whether you're a part of a couple or traveling as a single.

Why not go to a city outside the US and join various day/walking tours? Several years ago I was travelling alone in Bosnia and ended up on a food tour of Sarajevo and met a woman on it who I still keep in touch with years later.

yep, that's the key.

American cities tend to be less lively with small downtowns which don't have many residents to start with, so a solo travel can feel lonely. If you go to the nature such as the national parks, it is even worse.

The OP should travel more outside of North America and explore the wonderful world, South America, Europe or Asia. I travel alone often and always enjoy myself in those big and vibrant cities because you are surrounded by people. Join one of those walking tours and you are bound to be able to strike a conversation with another single traveler, or even people who travel together.

very small tours / sailing / fishing cruises is a great idea 5- 10 people would be my choice.

I like to work on farms and ranches in my free time. I have always done that as a solo (until I had a family).

You can join a variety of 'volunteer' vacations (helping the needy worldwide)

If the OP is a nature lover and wants an active vacation, he should consider the small group hiking/backpacking/rafting tours offered by the Sierra Club and by companies like REI and O.A.R.S. All the nature you can desire, sans the loneliness!

The key is deciding just what sort of vacation you want (domestic, international, city-based, outdoor-nature based?), and then finding the right tour. Could be a shorter walking tour like the ones offered by San Francisco City Guides, could be a longer group tour, could be a tour organized around a specific interest or activity. There are tons of choices!

Go to Ireland, especially Belfast. A single person attempting to eat a meal alone will have his/her chair moved for them to a table with others. Edinburgh also, especially in the pubs.

Join meetup.com. There's probably a travel group in your area. National Geographic and Sierra Club also offer travel outings both nationally and internationally.

One of my best vacations was doing volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity. Do you have any idea how many eligible Women work for Habitat? And even better most of them are a lot better people than you would meet bar crawling. Plus it is inexpensive.
