I'm trying to plan a trip to Spain and wanted peoples opinions on these 2 cities. I was considering a Rick Steves tour to both, but not sure I want to do that. I think I would prefer Barcelona, but they are two very different cities from what I'm reading. So who has been there and which do you like better?

Depending how many days you have.

Less than 4: either
4-7: Madrid and surrounding area
More than 8: both

Also depends on weather. Madrid can be quite hit in the summer.

Never been to Madrid, but you can probably do 3-4 days in Barcelona. More if you're into museums.

I enjoyed both, but I remember more about Barcelona than about Madrid. I love art museums and especially the ones in Barcelona. In Madrid, someone tried to plow me down with a bicycle, but I managed to move quickly. It was scary.

will you come back? if so... Barcelona now, and Madrid for a 'southern tour' / week in Spain.

NW region (Basque) is worth yet another trip (can combine with SW France)

We did the SW France/Basque journey about 4 years ago, and it was great. We did it during Christmas time, but the weather was actually quite nice.

Both cities have their good points, it just depends on how much time you have to spend.

Let me hitch hike maybe hijack this thread just a wee bit. We are beginning to plan 3 weeks in Spain in February 2016. Tentative itinerary is Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Granada. Thoughts about weather, itinerary in general, suggestions for day trips and so forth. Thanks.

I am considering doing these in the winter too.

Side trips:
Madrid: Toledo, Segovia, Avila
Seville: Cordoba
Malaga: Ronda? I heard Malaga is not that interesting.
Valencia: Ibiza? maybe not day trips.
