I don't understand why Americans complain how bad domestic flights are - fare is so cheap, what do you expect? Yes, service was way better and seats much wider 50 years ago, but remember to check what the prices were (inflation adjusted).
There are business class, and often economy plus if you need more legroom. The problem is you don't want to pay for the extra comfort.
In Canada, a flight between Toronto and Vancouver regularly costs $550-600, while the same distance often costs half of that in the US given all the cheap options. What to whine about?
you are just kidding yourself.
Skytraks assess quality of businesses class and gives AA (and Delta and UA) a three star, when there are 7 five starred and 38 four starred.
I can't imagine avoiding Southwest, they often have the cheapest fare and I've got no problems with Southwest especially since they subdivided the lineup more to reduce rugby scrum at the gate.
I avoid SW whenever possible. I don't care for their cattle car approach. They are no longer the lowest price either.

This is true. Airfare today is dirt cheap compared to years ago. And the public is getting exactly what they want. It's been proven over and over that the market will not support higher prices for better service.

Because paying higher prices has really never yielded better service.
What is strange about someone not having flown in 20 years?? There are people who have NEVER been on a plane.
My sister is 63 and she has never flown. Probably never will. She is not a traveler.
My late grandmother flew for the first time at 86 from NJ to CA to attend my cousin's wedding. When she got home I asked her how she liked flying. I can still see the way her eyes lit up and her big smile. "I really liked it!"
She flew again at 89 to Florida to visit her sister.

Not true at all. Here is a list of "all business class" airlines that have failed because the public refuses to pay for better service:
Legend Airlines
La Compagnie
Ultra Air
Air Atlanta
MGM Grand Airways
Regent Airlines
McClain Airlines
Air1
Eos Airlines
Silverjet
MAXjet Airways
Midwest Airlines
L'Avion
OpenSkies
