Lived in europe, spent time in Central America, Canada many times, the Caribbean. There is so much to see in our country that is where I will be spending my travel dollars.
In my opinion, outside of relatively few major cities, US travel is mainly about seeing nature. If you want to experience culture, night life and you have been to New York/Boston Chicago/San Francisco/New Orleans/Miami/Denver perhaps Dallas and Seattle, there is not much else to see and experience. Also, due to poor state of public transportation in the US travelling here requires lots of driving. For me, that is work and something I want to minimize on vacation. For these reasons I generally prefer international travel.
I guess someone's location in the US also matters. If you live in the East Coast of the US within reasonable distance to a major airport, it is really easy and quick to fly to Europe. There isn't a huge difference in either time or money to, for example, fly to either San Francisco or London from NYC.
