Travel Picks: The world's top 10 dangerous destinations

NEW YORK, Jan 25 (Reuters Life!) - People are opting for more unforgettable holidays but some countries can be risky even for the most adventurous travelers.

Forbes.com has compiled a list of the most dangerous destinations. The list is not endorsed by Reuters.

1. Somalia

This Horn of Africa country has been in the grip of warlords for the last decade, fighting for control of drug and weapon trafficking rights. Risks include military clashes, kidnapping, landmines and pirates.

2. Iraq

Military action, collateral damage, insurgency and suicide bombings are daily occurrences in the country. Security experts say unstable areas include Baghdad and stretch from Tikrit in the north to Hillah in the south and from Mandali in the east to Ramadi in the west.

Interesting- I sent this link to my boyfriend who's been to 3 of these countries recently (Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Pakistan) and he laughed. :P He suggested Nigeria, Burma, Cote D'Ivoire, Saudi Arabia, Liberia, Iran, Israel, and Colombia as being much more dangerous for good old Mom.

I'd add Haiti ( cite du soleil ) and Sierra Leone, Zaire, The Republic of Congo , Chad and Liberia. All sound perfect for MIL dearest.

It makes no sense to me why Lebanon is on that list. I was last in Lebanon in the Summer of 2005. Yes, things have gotten a bit hotter than they were throughout the late 90s and early 00s, but that doesn't make it dangerous. I mean, people still visit the country a lot. Also, according to a source I recall reading, the country had a successful tourist season in 2007. The ritzy tourist areas are as nice as ever. The Lebanese love tourists.

Send her to Afghanistan. On top of all the usual dangers, the difficulty of being a western woman in a traditional Islamic culture will add mental anguish to the mix.

I lived in Sierra Leone for 2 years and while that country did have its war a few years back, the people there are WAY too nice for a mean, nasty MIL. The pit latrines, mosquitoes, public transportation and heat, especially at this time of year (April) would be great for a bad MIL, but the genuine niceness of the people would make up for all of that. Were it not for the hospitality of the Sierra Leoneans I lived with, I would have never made it for 2 years. I say pick a different place for MIL!
