I have heard that Gmail is banned in China. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks. Sounds like a VPN is necessary.

One can use GMAIL in China but it works very slowly there. It is best to use a different email account if possible while in China.

I just went to China in September....I used the VPN "Betternet" on my iPhone and I was able to get Gmail, Facebook, etc. Without it, even on WiFi networks in the hotels, they would not work.

Sorry to revive an old thread. My boss is going to Mainland China in a week. We have our own domain but are using G Suite to access email (via gmail.com). I just called G Suite support and the guy said that gmail.com will work in China without any problems (other products are blocked like Drive, Google, etc.).

Can anyone confirm if this is true/current? The answers here were from two years ago.

Not sure, I travel to China quite a bit never use Gmail, but be advised that China internet policy seems to change all the time, seemingly based on the whims of a collection of communist bureaucrat's. Seriously, sometime I think if they have a bad day they flip a switch to ban this or that page, then someone else brings it back the next day.
Youtube, facebook, porn sites, Tibet sites, certain forums, etc. are always banned. Once the CityData forum was banned on one trip.
Just do like the average Chinese citizen and get a VPM.
You can also check on the Asian forum. Several expats in China post there.

If your boss is in a tech field, I have additional security instructions for him/you.

I don't know how complicated a VPN is. He's there for two weeks I think.

I did read that Yahoo wasn't blocked though. And that you can link Google into your Yahoo account and be able to receive/reply Gmail that way. Has anyone tried that method?

Thanks in advance.

I was in China twice last year, once for over two months.

Gmail = nope
Facebook = nope
Blogger = nope
Google = nope
Twitter = nope
Google maps = nope
And many others.

Obvious solution is VPN, but China is in a constant game of wack-a-mole with VPNs so having one doesn't guarantee it'll work. As a bonus if you try to change your VPN server location you might find the VPN's website where you do this is also blocked.

Yahoo mail works and allows you to add other mail accounts, so that is an option just add your gmail to yahoo. The data from gmail is fetched by yahoo servers in US so no block. Another good idea before you go is get an ad blocker, because often web pages load really slow because of ads coming from blocked IPs. Pages often dynamically load ads then content, so web page hangs until ads script times out, then finally loads. Ad blocker can make a big difference.

Also = there are some guest houses that have their own VPN, at least for the connection in the lobby. It might be slow but it works. This is usually word of mouth but you can find it in reviews of guest houses that cater to the younger crowd, and even if you aren't staying there can go order a coffee and have at it.
