Yes. Amazing country, truely like no-where else on earth. Icelandic is basically impossible learn unless you grow up speaking it, but everyone speaks English.

Airfare/Hotel/Car isn't overly expensive but what you by when you get there isn't cheap, but is worth it.

We're going in May of this year and have rented a 4wd car. I looked at tripadvisor website specifically their Iceland forum. You can check out what other people have done and ask for advice also. If you're going in Aug, book hotels now.

+1 on book hotels, esp if out on the perimeter Ring Road...

TA does have good Iceland threads, though that site is not as handy to read as C-D, et al, but lots of info there and on other Iceland sites. We have been reading like we are going to the moon, lol, though we have travelled to some offbeat/hard to get to places before.

It will be interesting to read any/all threads by posters here, once they/we have returned from Iceland.

Do the Icelandair stopover. If you're flying anywhere in Europe Icelandair already flies, you can enjoy their stopover program essentially free -- it has always been exactly the same price as the round-trip to my destination. Spend a few extra days in Iceland and buy sweaters. Win-win.

I had a good experience with Blue Car Rental when I was there a couple of years back. I rented the Dacia Duster which is diesel and a manual transmission so it got great fuel economy.

With that you can easily do the golden circle drive in a full day.

I thought the Blue Lagoon was ok, but as it's man-made it's not something getting too excited about. It's advantage is that you can stop for a couple of hours before you head to the airport.

Question--if you were going to do only part of the Ring Road, would you do the south/southeast section from Reykavik to perhaps Hofn, or would you do the section going north from Reykavik? I'm not sure I want to do the entire Ring Road in my first trip. I'm only allotting about 10 days and I figured it would be a little to frenetic pace to try to cram the entire thing and have time to enjoy some of the sites.
