The Canadian dollar is around 69c to the US $1 right now. Go to Canada!

Montreal is a wonderful city. Quebec City is very charming. I stayed at the Chateau Frontenac and it's great.

Flying west is a piece of cake in terms of jet lag. It's flying east that's tough. I wouldn't worry about arriving tired to North America.

NYC would not cost a lot for air travel for either of you since it is a major hub.
