It does seem like a waste to come in the summer....but actually it can be a little cool in the winter, at least for a true beach vacation. People forget that it is quite windy ALL THE TIME and with the temps often in the 70's that's kinda cool for being in the water. It's also more expensive in the height of winter so go in the in-between times.
I went to Hawaii once (Oahu and Maui) end of October and the weather was nice, with showers from time to time. But for us European it's very far away and expensive . I only went there because my (now deceased) mother used to live there for a while in the late eighties.
I work at a small resort in Hawaii. It has always puzzled me why most vacationers come during the summer months when the weather on the mainland is about the same as here. Wouldn't it make more sense to get away during the miserable months of winter?
Yes. We always go around Thanksgiving or Jan - Feb.
I personally would go in the winter to escape the cold at home, but agree with papafox that having more daylight hours is a plus. I never have been inclined to go to Florida in the summer, since it's just as warm at home (but without the beach), so I wouldn't pay even more to go to Hawaii in the summer.
Been to Hawaii 4 times, various seasons, always brought along a light jacket and umbrella. Some areas get windy and sudden rains. Weather is pretty much constant all year around, the reason HI is so popular.
Fall, Winter Spring are best when kids are in school. Summer is good if you have kids that like the water activities.
