I'm trying to get information about U.S. Route 1 between Baltimore and D.C. in the days before the B/W Parkway and, later, I-95 were built.

From what I understand, that stretch of it was known for being the sleaziest part of Rt. 1 from Key West to Maine, with lots of bars, taverns, roadhouses, and no-tell motels (strictly segregated). My parents tell me that on the Monday morning local news, they'd always give the weekend Rt. 1 traffic body count.

There are still a few remnants of those days remaining.

Anybody have any info on this?

It was the only choice then.

Dunno 'bout being THE sleaziest ...but it sure had it's share.
And in fairness most of that didn't happen until AFTER the Parkway and I-95 were around.
Rather like what happened to many old US Hwy routes everywhere.

I had lunch at Daniels yesterday. Great bacon cheeseburger.

Not sure about the body count but it's still an endless display of body shops and Taco Bells.

From what I've gathered, while the number of those places declined, the sleaziness increased, until around 1980, when sleaziness started declining and larger-scale commercial operations started.
