I'll be moving across the US pretty soon, and taking a photography-based road trip along the way. I want to document the journey with stories and pictures to fill out my travel portfolio. Are there recommended travel blogs, or is it better to post them to a customized website? (I'd upload them to my 500px or some other portfolio website- and probably will on an individual basis- but I'd like to create a cohesive story somewhere, too)

Not sure that you're looking for. Professional bloggers use WordPress or Blogger. Blogger is easy but looks crappy. If you don't need the comments feature, just post on Facebook.

You could also use Google photos which allows one to share on Facebook as well as Google+.

If you Google something like Best Photo Blog Platform you'll get lots of good recommendations. Sounds like a fun trip!!!

I know I've seem travel blog websites that anyone can join. You can have your own section of the site, so to speak, and contribute whatever you want. Stories, photos, etc.

You might also think about Youtube. All sorts of people make little vacation movies. It doesn't take much. Just about any digital camera these days will take movie clips. Take some along the way and put it all together later for upload.

We moved to Europe this past summer. I started a blog of our travels while we live here (next 3 years or so). I am not that blog wise, and used Wordpress to get started. It was very easy and free. I upload my pictures and it's straightforward to use.
