Baggage handlers destroyed my old, travel worn suitcase flying Delta from SLC to SFO. Strangely enough, Delta replaced it on the spot, no questions asked (it looked like a half-eaten hamburger) with a nice cheap plastic (synthetic material of some kind) bag that traveled well from SFO to CPH on SAS.

So, if you can't afford a TUMI, this is an option.

What ever you buy, don't buy luggage that has the zippers on the edges. Get one where the zipper is in the middle of the bag. We had some luggage that we really liked, after 2 trips the zippers were beat to hell, not because they were cheap, but because they get bumped over and over. When I brought them to a repair shop the guy told me about the zipper location. He said he could replace them but it would happen again so they weren't worth repairing.

I love my Ricardo soft side zip suitcase with rollers. It's light as a feather and rolls very smoothly and easily. The handle is also very comfortable. Check them out at Macy's. I would also suggest getting a less common color so you can spot on the baggage carousel more quickly.
