I've been in the past, so I wouldn't mind missing it. However, my teenage son hasn't been yet. I really don't want to shell out more money to get access to the pedestal. Will I regret this decision? Thoughts?

Save the money and walk a couple feet further to the Staten island ferry terminal. Hop on the ferry to Staten Island, you get a great view of the statue of liberty on the trip to Staten Island and a pretty good view of Ellis Island. When it docks at St. George on Staten Island, go right back upstairs for the return trip to Manhattan. The Staten Island ferry, AFAIK, is still free, so save the money for something more useful in NYC.

Yes, we did take the SI ferry our first summer back in NY. Very enjoyable (and best parts being free & having Dairy Queen in the SI terminal

I do, however, want to get the actual feel of Ellis Island and hope to visit later this summer. Thanks.

Ellis Island is fascinating, and well worth a visit. There was a small cinema there showing a movie of the historical aspects of the place. Standing above the grand hall looking down, and imagining the folks gathered there waiting to enter the United States was a memorable experience.

When I took my son there at the age of 15, he didn't want to go up. He said it was too hot and he didn't want to stand in line.

^^^This, word for word. I found it very powerful to be there.

Just chiming in here to agree wholeheartedly that Ellis Island is absolutely worth it.
The others are ok but Ellis Island gets my endorsement.

Looked at touring both the statue and Ellis island when I booked our NY weekend, they were booking for August. Looks like we will take the Staten Island ferry there and back and be happy with that.

Depends. I found the Ellis Island trip via ferry well worth it. I had (back in the Lee Iacocca renovation days) paid to put the names of my grandparents who came to USA in late 19th and early 20th century on the outside memorial. I was fortunate before my parents died to coordinate a trip to NYC area for my work and meet up with them while they were on a seniors tour to NYC. One of my favorite memories was having coordinated that trip and greeting them when their ferry got there and then spending a few hours there and taking a nice photograph of us together in the hall.

I surmise time of year with larger volumes of visitors (mid summer) may dampen the enjoyment a bit. I was there in 97 (autumn) and returned in 06 while on another long weekend to see ballgames at Mets and Yankee stadiums in September.

Are you sure about that? I looked at a few random dates - and there seems to be plenty of availability. Robyn
