Those phone cards you purchase at corner stores, gas stations and department stores: do they work for cell phones in Canada and US? Have any of you done this instead of putting a long distance phone plan on your cell phone?

We will be traveling through US and Canada for 2-3 months this summer and I'm trying to figure out if they would be a good idea to use a phone card with my cell phone rather than get a long distance calling plan on my phone. If I get a plan on my phone, I can get unlimited texts, unlimited calling and 750MB for an extra $75 onto my normal bill.

I know I won't have any data or free text messages with a phone card, but maybe it would be cheaper to just get unlimited text for $20 extra.

What do you think?

Please tell me if you have any tricks to traveling and using your cell phone... thanks!
