I just came from my Chicago visit last night and was a different experience for me this time compared to the other places I have traveled to. I wasn't too expensive for me since I stayed in hostel and was dependent on public transportation and not on rental car.
I would like to know what other places have good public transportation which I can use for visiting places in the city? I have already been to NY and Los Angeles so it's put of list.
NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, DC, Chicago and San Fran.

People might say Portland, Seattle etc, but in reality what they have is still pretty pathetic. Just think about it, Vancouver, Canada is smaller than Seattle but has 4 subway lines.

Agreed. There are other places you can pull off living with public transportation, but I consider the bar higher for tourists who need ease and efficiency and are not there to spend time learning how to navigate a system.
Los Angeles can't seem to build additional light rail lines fast enough. Next month, the Expo line continues on from Culver City to Santa Monica, originating in downtown L.A.
You really don't need a car in L.A. anymore. Fly into LAX, hop on the Green line shuttle, which will take you to the Green Line, get your $5 Tap Card, and away you go!
They just opened the Green Line between Minneapolis and St. Paul, and they have the line going to the Airport and the Mall of America, and there's a commuter line that goes NW to Anoka?
Are we talking about purely from a visitors perspective? Pretty much any city that has a subway or light rail. Even LA is a great place for a car-free vacation. Minneapolis is also great, several light rail lines and a good bus system.

It only looks good on paper.
In reality, LA is still car dependent. Public transit is hardly as convenient as it appears on the map. Many bus routes are far from frequent, and some stop services very early. Additionally, LA is simply too spread-out for current transport to be a viable replacement for cars.
You need to look at both overall overage (can you get to most destinations by public transit?) and dependency (it is frequent enough for people to use for their daily needs?)
