Bags look alike and if they become lost and you need to report it to the airlines it helps if you have a picture of them. Yes, go ahead and take some pictures with your cell phone to show them what your bag looked like. Also it helps to have pictures of what is “inside” the bag should you have to file a claim should it become lost.

As you're on the approach to your destination there will be an announcement telling you which baggage area to go to. If you don't hear it, ask the attendant as you deplane.

Actually there *may* be an announcement. Sometimes they don't get word to the plane in time. Even if there is an announcement, it's always best to check the monitors upon arriving at the baggage claim area in case there's been a change.

You should have the number for the bag and insurance for the bag , so if the bag is lost you will never find it , and if have heard of people who lost their bags and never found them

if you print out boarding passes print one extra and put it inside your checked bag, so if it's lost, mistakenly taken, and the tags ripped off, your info is right inside when opening - and the airline knows where your destination is.

And yes, get a unique looking bag tag, especially if your roller bag is black.

When you check a bag, you will also get a bag receipt. Put it in a safe place because it's your proof of the bag's existence.

Common for the baggage carousel LED screen to only display the flight number and airline code for the baggage on that carousel, not where the flight came from. So look at your boarding pass for the last leg of your flight, and find something like:

DL 4327 (aka flight 4327 for Delta)

Then match that to the right bag carousel.

Don't be afraid to ask questions of airline employees and security types and it's welcome to say 'this is my first time flying- what am I supposed to do?'. There's an assumption that everyone in the airport already knows the whole routine; a statement up front saying you don't is usually likely to generate some kind & polite words from the employee. You get the grumpiness when they're assuming you think the rules you didn't know existed don't apply to you.

^ Just a heads up the term "Direct" flight in Airline Terms does not mean its a Non-Stop.

A "Direct" flight is a flight that does not require a plane change (or connection), but may stop at other airports on the way to your final destination.

ie: Atlanta to Salt Lake City to Phoenix but you stay on the same physical plane, Plane goes to SLC, Most passengers would get off, and other get on, but you just stay in your seat during this time period as the plane is in SLC.

You can buy bags, both carry-on and checked luggage, that have an integrated TSA approved combination lock. That way you don't have to use a separate padlock.
