In one of the pueblos around Taos, my SIL asked to take picture of an old Navajo woman, and the woman immediately did that V for victory finger thing and asked for $5. Not an art photo.
I've had endless tourists ask if they could have a photo of .... not me, my dogs. An entire bus load of Japanese tourists at Stonehenge all wanted their photo taken with the brace of Scottish Deerhounds. 72 photo opportunities and some extremely happy, polite, and grateful tourists. Probably the highlight of their tour.
At the battle pf Tewkesbury, which is a reenactment in full costume with blazing canons, dozens of costumed lords and ladies, including Queen Elizabeth (wife of King Edward IV, not the current queen) and her men at arms, wanted their photo with the Scottish Deerhounds.
Nobody ever asks for a photo of me, although I get asked to take a photo of them fairly often.
I'd consider that very rude. "Interesting" can mean a lot of things...good or bad - if it was me I'd not want to wonder why you were wanting a picture. As a photographer I stick to architecture and landscapes. Just keep the people in your memories.
I was in Europe and asked a couple to take our photo . Afterwards I asked if they wanted one with my camera . They first thought it was weird but then the guy gave me his card and I emailed the photo to him
I've been tempted to... say if I see cute kids doing something... but I think in this day and age, it just seems too odd or suspicious to other people, so I've never asked.
If you look sane and cheerful, I've been known to ask others to take pictures of me and friends. Otherwise, I wouldn't dream of it. When I was in China, though, it seemed like every other person and their mother wanted to take a picture of me and for me to pose with their children (I guess it was the first time they had seen a black person in person ). I gladly obliged, but it was still a little creepy.
