From an urbanistic/city lover's perspective, Frankfurt is a better city than the majority of cities of similar size in the US and Canada.
I am not saying it's a head honcho, just trying to explain the love that Montreal is getting here (and often on other threads).
Rightly or wrongly, Montreal is seen by many as the only opportunity to sample what "the French*" have done with new world, urban big city living. (On a broader level, the province of Quebec is also the only large-scale human colony of France in the new world where you have a large number of people of old French origin still living in French.) Whereas there are tons of equivalent post-colonial offshoots for Britain and Spain, for example.
*The reality of the city is more complex than this as we both know, but that's still the perception many have.
Disagreed completely. Atlanta is big and urban, but it's also boring. Frankfurt suffers a similar fate. It's as interesting as Calgary or Edmonton to me, but less interesting to me than Vancouver.
Otherwise, yeah, Montreal is unique in North America, and it's a cool city in general - no doubt about it- it doesn't really fit in well when you look at what the world has in terms of most unique.

.
Well, Calgary and Edmonton are considered reasonably interesting and attractive cities in Canada. That's my point! Plop Frankfurt down on the Canadian Prairies and a lot of people will think it's just great!
I don't think so. It is largely a North American city with a European flavoured old town. It is somewhat different from other North American city, but by no way that unique.
