We plan where we stay, how will we get to the location, what we want to see and do while in the area. This has worked well for us visiting 49 states and most of Canada. Before the Internet we used AAA guide books, now we still use AAA and supplement by TripAdvisor. TA is great for what hotel to stay at, where to eat and what to see. When you only have a few days in a place it helps to see what others think. We typically plan 6 months in advance for our trip. Vacations typically last 2-3 weeks with some as long as a month with 2 vacations per year. Before I retired I had 35 PTO days a year so time off was not a problem and I took all 35 days!!!!

Winging it is not bad in slow season, but in high season, you will be paying more for less.

I have gone to Aruba, in peak, and winged it, but had to settle for less than basic motel.

Planning it will get you a good room and rate, and better airfare, always. Book 3 months out.

As far as winging it, besides hotel and air, we do that all the time! Go with the flow and just worry about drink and food and suntan lotion.

This depends. In LV the first time I took bf there, I planned it. Now we wing them. I winged Miami just last month-I'm from there. But NYC I will plan as it's a week and he's never been and I want to have tickets/reservations to all the attractions.

I like to research a place and have a set number of places I want to go or places I want to eat. I make sure that everything I have planned takes up less than half the time I have for the trip. Once I'm there I like to wander around and get lost in the city, especially if I'm in an area I enjoy.
