Of course not sure how much value is in the luggage
In NY, LGA, you have to show your baggage claim ticket every single time and they matching it with your baggage. They'll not let you out without it.

Good reason to have a conspicuous suitcase. When I had a hardside case I had stickers on that made it look different from others like it. When it died of old age, I replaced it with one with camo print on it. I can spot it half way across the airport.

I have been checked, but not for many years.

Once somewhere overseas (they checked everyone) and once in the US because my bag was put on the wrong flight.

Yep. I was going to mention Laguardia. I've actually watched them have to tell people "you grabbed the wrong suitcase."

It's also important to have if your suitcase is lost.

Yes I too have been asked for it at LGA when I was forced to check in my carry-on.

Here in St. Louis, 20-some years ago, we went through a year or two of having to show claim ticket when we picked up bags...... I think it was in response to some thievery......

LGA or JFK, can't remember which, but I remember coming back from Jamaica and being asked for my ticket. I think another time in Los Angeles I was asked. I've used it many times for lost luggage though....

I have, but probably more than thirty years ago. It used to be standard for them to post someone at baggage claim to check all bags as they left.

It was very useful one time when my bags didn't arrive when I did. The airline dropped it off in the middle of the night, enabling me to go to a funeral properly dressed.

NY Airports....LGA, EWR and JFK...almost always. You don't get out of the area without showing the baggage claim and they match it to the luggage tag.
