I am still angry about my flight from JFK to Rome. It's an overnight flight and I was so tired. I wanted to doze off and wake up in Rome. I am in an aisle seat and my wife is in the middle seat. A single Italian man is sitting in the window seat.

About an hour into the flight, a large Italian man walks down the plane aisle and stops right next to me and starts a long conversation with the man who is sitting at the window seat. He is standing inches from me and my wife yelling over us with his hands on my seat to steady himself as the plane rocks from turbulence. The fasten seat belt sign is on but no one is paying any attention to it. His man is just one of a large group of working class Italians standing in the aisle in long conversations with each other.

A flight attendant passes by and does nothing.

I keep waiting for the conversation between the man standing inches from me and the man in the window seat to end but it keeps going. I grab the mans arm and tell him to move back to his seat. He ignores me and acts like he does not know English.

Finally I go back to the galley and ask a flight attendant to ask the man to move. He tells me that if he had to solve every passenger interpersonal issue no one would get any food. (I struck out.)

So for most of the rest of the flight I have a huge man standing next to me in the aisle talking loudly to the passenger at the window seat.

Though I'm not at all convinced that the flight attendant really responded that way, there was an easy solution. Why didn't you simply offer to switch seats with the italian guy in the window seat?

I would have been miffed too....Pretty inconsiderate of both the passengers and the attendant.

I wouldn't have grabbed the guys arm though.

I'm confused. Did you survey all these Italians to confirm they were 'working class'?

And the large man was allowed to ignore all seat belt signs and stood next to you for 8 hours?

That's what headphones are for. Be lucky body odor wasn't a factor (not uncommon on a flight full of Europeans).

JFK to Rome - what was that - 6 hours? And he stood there the WHOLE time? There must be more to this....and how does it matter if they appear to be "working class"?

similar on trains to / from Italy, but often there are 4-5 guys smoking and laughing all night next to your seat.

Sleeping is really over-rated, you just get what you get, and when you are REALLY tired, you will sleep.

Take it to their level,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Rudeness on their part. Seems like the only thing you might have been able to do is play music loudly on your iphone, pc, or laptop. They might get the idea…………………… lol
