Haha! I totally agree with you! However, I would like to have something simply for emergencies, since one never knows.

I suggest getting a dual simcard smartphone. This way the OP can purchase a local prepaid simcard for cheap local calls while at the same time keeping his/her American number active.

This is a good suggestion. Go on Amazon and buy a BLU R1 HD, it's about $100 ($60 if you're Amazon Prime) for a brand new 16gb Android 6 smart phone that is unlocked and dual SIM. Add a 64gb SD card and it'll hold as many pictures as you can possibly take.

Sure it isn't the fanciest phone but would do what you need overseas with any local GSM SIM.

In case anyone else is looking or cares--I ended up purchasing a phone through Mobal. From what I saw it had great reviews, and the phone also works in many, many countries and comes with the necessary adapters.

Thanks for your help, all. If this phone doesn't work out, I'll check back with this thread.

One issue to consider is frequency bands. Different countries use different bands, so a US phone may not use the bands in a particular country, or only overlap with a few. I've run into this problem. It is not fixed with a local sim card. It is a hardware issue.

The OP needs to make sure that they get a tri-band phone.

The easiest thing to do is just to a phone store when you get there and get a cheap burner phone to use for the time your there. You know it will work and you don't have to do anything special. Buy as much time as you think you'll need and your done.
