Thanks for sharing this. I lived in Chicago, and it's nice to see it rank so highly.

I'm supposing that the OP is surprised by The Umstead, #26, in Cary (Raleigh), North Carolina?

These lists are usually a function of a well-connected publicist and a client that is buying major ad space in the same issue.

Don't have time to do that whole slideshow, is the Hotel Niko in San Francisco on the list?

Never stayed at any of these - though I have been inside the two that are in Chicago (the common and bar/lounge areas - both are nice, though I like the Thompson's restaurant and lounge better than Virgin). Almost stayed at the Surrey in NYC semi recently. These lists are always funny...definitely not a definitive list though at all.

I heard a lot about the Umstead Resort and Spa in Raleigh when I lived there. I would totally do a staycation there. It's right next door to the world renowned SAS Headquarters also equally amazing.

Seriously, who made that list? Marriott Austin among the 50 best hotels in the world? Ridiculous. Obviously made by some elderly, rather wealthy Americans who tend to spend their vacation in those places and then some little bit of other destinations where they might have been for leisure or business, but certainly nothing to do with the best hotels IN THE WORLD.

How did the Burj Al Arab not make the list but the JW Marriott in downtown Austin (where I live) did? That's absurd!
