I would take the Heathrow Express into Paddington, grab the Big Bus, right outside the station, and do the hop on hop off until your heart's content. Grab a cab to your friend's place, and fly out the next day.

That's why my goal was 3 places and that's it...I'll have to return one day to 'really' do the place justice
They are about a 5 minute walk apart, that's why I was thinking they could be combined into the same general time frame. Just something to keep in mind if you end up having a little more energy and time than anticipated.

Why drop the display or armour?

That's actually what I was looking forward to the most...

Fair enough - it's a matter of Personal choice and personal taste. I found the armour a bit boring. But the royal jewels - those I love, and have revisted. So, if you're more enthused about the armor than the jewels, maybe drop the jewels. Because Westminster Abbey is well worth it. IMHO.

How long should I expect it to take to view the jewels?

I love your plan! I was going to suggest the Tower as the one must-see. Also it may seem a little time consuming but the Yeoman Warder tour at the tower is fascinating and awesome. I was meh about the armour as well but was pretty tired but that time.

Those HOHO buses are great when you have limited time - I was in Barcelona for one day and was recommended to take one to get an overview - it was great.

Heathrow express, definitely. So quick.
