Hello everyone,

We have about 11 days of vacation starting on December 21st, and would love to spend the time to wander around and discover new places. Currently live in the Washington DC area and looking for recommendations of good places to road trip and things to discover during that time. Would love to drive to California, but won't probably have enough time sadly, unless, we did the drive one way and flew home. Any ideas, tips and recs of places greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Key West for a USA road trip in Dec!

(Unless you like COLD, REAL cold!)

Bit too late to grab those $89 fares to the Left Coast, but it is cold / foggy / rainy there in winter (except for Santa Barbara and points South.)

I REALLY appreciated NZ and Australia last Dec / Jan

Blue Ridge Parkway or SE USA in Spring or Fall
Rocky Mtns or PNW in Summer

NE USA in Fall

my tip... as soon as you can LEAVE town on the 21st... you get OUT. Drive overnight (South), when it gets warm. pull off and take a nap under a shade tree. Keep going SOUTH.

Once you have arrived in Paradise...
Calculate the hours to return home. Set the clock at the time you need to be back to work, subtract the minimum hours to drive home, then STAY south till the clock strikes 'Head Home time". I usually show up about 10 min BEFORE I need to go to back to work +/- a couple hours.

Yeh unfortunately, too late to get good ticket prices. No, actually we want to escape the cold How long do you think it will take to get to Key West from the DC area? Anything interesting to see on the way?

You can go most anywhere and have a good road trip. How about Outer Banks in winter? Niagara Falls and Toronto?

Much depends on how far you want to drive. You could do west coast and back, but that would be hundreds of miles a day.

Gulf coast is an easier drive. Texas is doable but would be two days of driving each way.

Thank you. We want to get the most out of the trip but only have 11 days total to do the drive and come back, so looking for ideas of what would be the most efficient way to do it and where to go where we wouldn't spend the entire time driving and not have time to enjoy the area.

Miami and South Florida is a great vacation idea. The daytime temperatures should be in the mid to upper 70s. It would take around 16 hours to drive from DC to Miami straight. It's better to stop along the way. You could check out Charleston, Savannah or Orlando.

The most efficient would be fly to the start and drive back. You may want to try using Skyscanner.com and put WAS to USA to see what flight options fit your budget and plan a road trip from there.

18 hrs, You can leave after work and be there by late morning or noon the next day (with 2 drivers)

No sense dinking around GOING, you can scout and research on the way down and enjoy whatever suits you / best weather on the way back.

I Like St Augustine and Charleston, but you can see those anytime.

Just tried that, because we would be leaving on or around Dec 21st, almost everything i saw for that date or around it , was overpriced.
